Hello to all and it's great to see a platform like this. There are not too many guarantees in life but I would bet big that this site will become quite popular over time. It's truly amazing how many people have a need for information, sharing, and support in this matter but aside from a few commercialized sites the platforms are lacking... So thank you!
By way of introduction, my name is Matthew Pixa. I'm coming up on my 2 year anniversary of a bilateral hip surface replacement. (May of 2012)
For some quick background, I had been a competitive athlete for many years. At one point in college I was running about 110 miles a week as a Division I athlete. I kept competing for years after that but each year I could tell the tread on my tires (the cartilage in my hips) was wearing down. I began doing triathlons to "cross train" but my competitive mentality turned that into competing in Ironman triathlons (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and a full 26.2 marathon run) ...not what the doctor ordered!
Long story short...the pain became worse and worse even when I completely stopped all impact type activities. I couldn't even sleep at night and simple things like clipping my toe nails became an ordeal. It was time to get my life back but the fear of surgery or not being able to be active afterwards was almost as crippling as the bone on bone pain. In May of 2012 I went under for a 7.5 hour surgery and now have 2 Birmingham hip resurfaces. I'll post more in different parts of this forum as time goes on but let's just say that on most days I don't even remember that I had the surgery. What a new lease on life! I was also given the full go-ahead to be able to do whatever I wanted as it related to physical activities/sports. Yes...even running and doing an Ironman again. Perhaps that's not the perfect activity for the longevity of my replacements but my surgeon said I'm good to go!
Fast forward to now... I found this site after deciding to create a triathlon team that is dedicated to win awareness and win funds for charities instead of win podium spots. Connecting to Honeybones through TeamMPG (Team My Portfolio Guide) is a result of this effort. Each athlete is raising funds and awareness for their specific charity (like Honeybones) by competing in an Ironman. I truly look forward to continuing to spread the word and being a part of this.
I'll post again in this forum with my learnings and tips for getting through the process. In the meantime, wish me luck as I train for Ironman Arizona in November 2014.
Thanks again for hosting this forum and I look forward to learning, sharing, and supporting all those who join!
